Agriculture and Technology have always been at odds, evident enough in the political and economic history of India itself. However, things took a different turn after President Emmanuel Macron declared that France will be ready for a blockchain revolution, that too in the field of agriculture. So, guess what? A song of ice and fire is about to be composed in the realm of cryptofinance and economy!
Agriculture and Blockchain? How?
At all happened on Saturday (23rd February 2019) at the 56th International Agriculture Fair in Paris. President Macron has introduced the idea of using Blockchain technology to improve the supply chain management in European agriculture. Macron emphasised on the need for unity among the European countries so that they can occupy the limelight of the global markets and stand tall against the likes of Russia, China, and the United States; thus, highlighting the significance of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) by the European Union (EU). Macron has put forward three primary strategies as the driving forces behind the European agricultural market. These will boost the economy, as well as enable the continent to remain at par with other competing nations in the market. One of the strategies was the optimum utilisation of vanguard technologies like that of Blockchain. Macron added that Blockchain is capable of making agricultural production and distribution transparent, so that the consumer’s concerns about product sustainability can be taken care of.
So, are EU nations the only beneficiaries?
French President Macron’s vision is not just limited to the geopolitical boundaries of the European Union. While discussing the ecological policies under the CAP, Macron brought forth his plans to “export its (France’s) knowhow” to Africa. Macron envisions a just and fair competition in the global markets where every country deserves to participate, and hope to strengthen the platform for emerging markets as well. After all it is his declaration, that Blockchain technology “…is at the service of shared excellence..”, confirming that opportunities for a shared development with Africa do not seem o distant anymore. And, it is certain that the democratic nature of Blockchain technology would strengthen geopolitical ties by transcending territories, both physical and virtual.
Why does France want to embrace Blockchain?
A nation being led by a former telecoms executive is bound to witness technical reforms in every aspect, which includes administration and governance as well. Macron ardently believes in endorsing new technologies and digital innovations that have the potential to change the world. He views them as tools necessary for reforming the French economy.
2017 had already witnessed Macron making the pledge to transform France into a “startup nation”. Supported by the Minister for Economy and Finance of the Macron Government, Bruno Le Maire officially declared that France is prepared for a blockchain revolution.
