NASA is eyeing blockchain technology to curb cyber attacks and better air Traffic Management.
US space agency is planning to advance its technology by adding Blockchain to secure air traffic services and support. The agency will work with an open source Blockchain platform. Hyperledger Fabric is specifically designed for enterprise transactions that resemble typical air traffic management interactions.
The issue of privacy
Blockchain would address the potential issues of privacy, prevent spoofing, denial of service and other attacks, Reisman said. He asserted that Blockchain presents an engineering prototype that embodies design and method that may be applied to mitigate security issues.
Blockchain-based communication systems could be key in stopping spoofing and make the American air-traffic control system more secure. We intent to leverage an industrial-strength open-source enterprise-blockchain framework.NASA engineer Ronald Reisman
ADS-B surveillance technology
ADS-B is a surveillance technology in which an aircraft determines its position via satellite navigation and enables it to be tracked.
The eagerly-anticipated ADS-B system is supposed to go live in 2020, but NASA believes the system is already at risk of cyber attack. As the ADS-B tech does not secure flight plans and positions, which presents a raft of problems.
NASA believes Blockchain could be the solution so it has started preparing an open-source permissioned blockchain framework to protect ADS-B’s vulnerabilities.
A blockchain architecture could secure and improve the communication between authorised agents and minimising the risk of tech-savvy criminals gaining access easily.
The new framework also features certificate authority, smart contract support, and higher-bandwidth communication channels for private information that may be used for secure communication between any specific aircraft and any particular authorised member. The prototype demonstrates how this method can be economically and rapidly deployed in a scalable modular environment.
Hyperledger Fabric is a blockchain developed away from the fintech sector and designed for enterprise use. Honeywell, a major manufacturer of aircraft parts, is another industry giant confident that blockchain has a huge part to play in the aerospace industry.
