‘Energy consumption’ for cryptomining has always been a factor critics of cryptomining mock at. Critics compare energy consumed for cryptomining with the electricity used by electronic vehicles(EVs) to emphasise on volume of energy consumed by cryptomining.
Samsung Electronics tweeted about the launch of high performance semiconductors. Samsung’s production wing, Samsung Foundry, is producing 7-nanometer(nm) Low Power Plus (7LPP) process node. It allows up to 40% increase in area efficiency with 20% higher performance or in other terms 50% lower power consumption, according to Samsung’s press release. This will result in better yields with significantly few layers.

The new process is based on Extreme Ultraviolet(EUV) lithography technology and also makes the new 7LPP chips more dense. Thus, the area efficiency and energy efficiency augment. Eventually, these new Samsung chips have positive implications for crypto miners using Samsung’s hardware since energy costs is a critical factor in cryptomining industry’s profitability.
Scope for Future
Rapidly developing cryptomining requires smaller and more efficient chips. Samsung manufactured 10nm hardware for Halong Minining’s DragonMint T1 in April. The new EUV-based 10nm process node is a milestone for Samsung Foundry’s products. Hence, this development has the scope for development of 3nm technology node semiconductor.
In addition to enhancing cryptomining industry, 7LPP will also give a technological push in artificial intelligence(AI), networking, automotive industry, Internet of Things(IoT), 5G and many more sectors.
Samsung added that 7LPP manufacturing is to target mobile and high performance computing (HPC) applications. However, Samsung did not disclose the names of the first customers yet.
Charlie Bae, Executive Vice President of foundry sales and marketing at Samsung Electronics, stated:
“fundamental shift” of wafers manufacturing will be an “optimal choice not only for mobile and HPC, but also for a wide range of cutting-edge applications.”
He also said that introduction of the new EUV-based 7LPP node is a revolutionary milestone in the semiconductor industry.
